This weekend I had my first Model UN conference of the school year. I didn’t have much time to prepare for it, but our topics were not complicated and I was able to get my position papers done easily. This is my main extracurricular and it doubles as something that can assist me with my planned field of study. It can be really fun, I just didn’t enjoy this conference as much. I needed more work on my public speaking than I remembered. I always get up to do my opening statement and I’m not too confident. Of course, as the conference continues, I get better at it and I get more confident in what I’m saying to defend my point. I also love being able to contribute to resolutions, but there were way too many people in our committee. I definitely prefer smaller conferences because it gives me opportunities to practice and show off a little if I need to. The conference wasn’t as organized as it should’ve been, but I think it was a good experience anyway. Even if it wasn’t the most enjoyable, I know that all of these skills will benefit me in my future career and even now in ISM. Doing research and preparation for conferences is very similar to doing research papers for ISM. Although it’s nice to have Saturdays off, I can sacrifice a few here and there in order to get better at what I enjoy.
